1. Ship size
Large ships are resorts: water parks, ten restaurants, constant activity. Small ships are hotels that move: fewer people, smaller ports, calmer days. Neither is better — they're different holidays.
2. Cabin
Balconies are worth it on scenic routes like Alaska and the Norwegian fjords. On a warm-weather itinerary where you're ashore all day, an interior cabin funds a better excursion budget.
3. Pace
Count the sea days. Port-heavy itineraries are exciting and tiring; sea days are where the ship itself earns its keep. A first cruise usually works best with a mix.
